Having been invited to an Austrian family Christmas, we celebrated the birth of Jesus with the family Führer and Krömer. What's special this time was that instead of buying presents for each other, we donated the money to different organizations we support. (Kids received their presents.) When we first arrived in Austria, we couldn't have imagined having such a Jesus-centered faith community/family on the mission field.
Two years ago today on 30 December, we said farewell to our beloved friends and families in Japan, and our family's new journey took off in the restricted corona time. The freezing locked-down Austria soon welcomed us; new culture, new language, new food, new social systems, new everything, life became immensely different. And five months later, a life-threatening diagnosis changed the course of our life. We were shaken to the core many times, but also sustained and overwhelmed by the faithfulness of God, the love of our faith family and the power of your prayers. If I sum up our two years into one expression, it is "God's grace covering our weaknesses".
Our initial contract with OM Austria was two years and it's expired now. Thanks to OM, Rhema Church and our sending church and support group in Japan, however, our contract has been renewed and extended. We don't know how the weak vessels like us could be used for God's kingdom and His mission in Europe, but we are grateful for the extension and the privilege to serve God here.
The first two years, our main goals were two; German language learning and integration into the Austrian society. We had planned to attend a language school, and wanted to invite neighbors and the locals into our home to build relationships. But because of our unexpected situations, we couldn't do it in the way we had wished. Instead, we were thrown into the ocean of 'real life'. Sachi learnt the language, while trying to survive the hospital visits. I was forced to comprehend children's school and kindergarten requirements, in so doing improved my language ability. Although we couldn't invite people to our apartment, when our neighbors and the local people found out that we were fighting against the disease, they invited us to their homes - relationships have been built. Although it was not the way we had planned to achieve the goals, by the grace of God, we found ourselves having achieved the goals.
What are our new goals for the coming years? Our priority is Sachi's treatments (the last chemotherapy planned on 12 Jan) and complete healing. We will continue to trust the Lord for His healing and do everything needed for it. Another objective is saving the lost souls. When I was worshiping God in my car, the Holy Spirit impressed my heart and my eyes filled with tears. One word sprung to my mind; 救魂. There is no such a word in Japanese but it can be read as 'save souls (spirit/life)'. We, human beings cannot save souls, but the One who lives in us can. Jesus is the One and only who can save us from our sins (Matthew 1:21). Yes, in fact we came to Austria to make THIS Jesus known.
Asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants from the Muslim backgrounds have a very distorted imagine of Jesus - In Islam Jesus is not considered the Son of God nor has He died on the Cross. Many Austrians are indifferent to the Savior and some even cast ridicule on Jesus, but "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12)
Jesus wants more people to enter His Kingdom (John 10:16) and there are still many people in our city and in your city whom the Lord wants to save (Acts 18:9-10). Let's daily spend quality time with Jesus in 2023 (He is waiting for us!) and let His heart become ours. Thank you for your love and support for the last two years, we humbly ask you for your continuous prayers. Let us not be silent but proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ!
One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.” (Acts 18:9-10)

オーストリア人家庭のクリスマス会に招待されて、フューラー家とクレマー家と一緒にイエスさまの誕生をお祝いました。今回特別だったのは、お互いにプレゼント交換する代わりに、そのお金を私たちが支援する色んな団体に寄付したことです。（子どもたちはプレゼントをもらいました。）オーストリアに来た当初、宣教地でこんなにイエスさま中心の信仰の家族・共同体に与れるとは想像もできませんでした。
2 年前の今日12月30日、私たちは日本の最愛の友人たちや家族に別れを告げ、コロナ規制の厳しい中、新たな旅へと飛び立ちました。凍てつく、都市封鎖されたオーストリアが私たちを歓迎してくれました。新しい文化、新しい言語、新しい食べ物、新しい社会システム、新しい「すべて」、生活が大きく変わりました。そして5か月後、生命を脅かす診断が私たちの人生を完全に変えてしまいました。何度も根底から揺さぶられましたが、同時に神さまの誠実さ、信仰の家族の愛、そして皆さんの祈りの力に支えられ、圧倒されました。この2年間を一言で表すなら「私たちの弱さを包む神の恵み」です。
OMオーストリアとの最初の契約は 2 年で、この度期限が切れました。しかし、OM、レマ教会、そして日本の母教会と支える会のおかげで、契約は更新され、延長されました。私たちのような弱い器が、神の御国と主のミッションのためにヨーロッパでどのように用いていただけるのかわかりませんが、ここで主なる神さまに仕える機会と特権に感謝しています。
最初の2 年間の目標は主に2つありました。ドイツ語学習とオーストリア社会への融合です。当初は、語学学校に通う予定で、近所の人や地元の人々を家に招待して関係を築きたいと考えていました。しかし想定外の状況のために、望んでいたように、それらを行うことができませんでした。代わりに、私たちは「実生活（real life）」の海に投げ込まれました。サチは、病院の訪問をサバイブする（乗り切きる）のに必死で、気が付いたら語学力を身につけていました。僕は、子どもたちの学校や幼稚園の要件を理解しようと必死になっていたら、いつの間にか語学力が向上していました。なかなか家に人を招くことはできませんでしたが、私たちが病と闘っていることを知った隣人や地元の人々は、逆に私たちを彼らの家に招待してくれ、信頼関係が構築されました。目標達成のために計画した方法ではありませんでしたが、神さまの恵みにより、目標は達成していました。
今後数年間の新たな目標と言いますと、最優先事項は、サチの治療（残り1回の抗がん剤は1月12日予定）と完治です。引き続き主のいやしを信じて、そのために必要なことをすべて行っていきます。 もう一つの目標は、失われたたましいの救いです。運転中に主に賛美を捧げていると、聖霊に心に触れられ、目頭が熱くなりました。ある漢字が頭に浮かびました − 救魂。日本語にそのような言葉はないかもしれませんが、「たましい（霊・いのち）の救い」です。私たち人間はたましいを救うことはできませんが、私たちの中に住んでおられるお方はおできになります。イエスさまは、人をそ罪から救うことができる唯一のお方です（マタイ1:21）。私たちはこのイエスさまを宣べ伝えるためにオーストリアまで来ました。
イスラム教を背景を持つ亡命希望者、難民、移民の人たちは、イエス・キリストについて非常に歪んだイメージを持っています。 多くのオーストリア人は救い主に無関心で、イエスさまを嘲笑する人さえいます。しかし、「この方以外には、だれによっても救いはありません。天の下でこの御名のほかに、私たちが救われるべき名は人間には与えられていないからです。」（使徒4:12）
主イエスさまは御国にもっと多くの人々が加わるよう望んでおられ（ヨハネ10:16）、私たちの町と皆さんの町には、主が救おうとしておられる人々がまだまだたくさんいます（使徒18：9-10）。 2023年イエスさまと密な時間を日々持ちたいと思います（主は私たちを待っておられます！）、主の心が私たちの心となりますように。過ぎた2年間の皆さんの愛とサポートに感謝します。そして引き続きお祈りに覚えていただけたら嬉しいです。黙っているのではなく、イエス・キリストの福音を宣べ伝えましょう！
ある夜、主は幻によってパウロに言われた。「恐れないで、語り続けなさい。黙ってはいけない。わたしがあなたとともにいるので、あなたを襲って危害を加える者はいない。この町には、わたしの民がたくさんいるのだから。」（使徒 18:9-10）
