“Unusually quiet, she must be doing something again”, I thought to myself. When Liana does something in her room she knows is not good, she does it very quietly. Like putting a makeup and covering her face pink and blue, just before leaving for kindergarten in the stressful morning. She broke the silence this time however by bursting into tears and running into the living room to her mother. As Sachi asked why she was crying, she answered in tears, “Jesus died…” She was reading the children’s Bible and came to the story of His crucifixion. It was before the Easter and we talked about the important question; why Jesus had to die.
Our last few weeks have been full of new and even encouraging experiences.
1) We attended a (Rumanian) wedding in Austria for the first time.
2) Sachi and I made Maki(roll)-Sushi for our cell-group consisting of 6 families. We’d never prepared so much Sushi before!
3) Sachi passed her German exam required for our visa extension! Praise the Lord! There is no more required exam.
4) Our church’s new ministry, InterK (intercultural ministry) for which I am responsible began the ‘women’s café’. In the Islamic culture, men are not allowed to socialize with women. With the Lord’s guidance, four female staff of InterK, Sachi included started the ministry for women, and five females with international backgrounds came to the first meeting. The feedback was very positive and two Middle Eastern ladies whom Sachi invited are already looking forward to the next weekly-café.
5) A young Iranian couple whom Sachi and I have been taking care of has recently not only welcomed their first baby, but also got their asylum application granted (not usual for Iranians to receive it only after the first attempt) – they are now official refugees and can live without the fear of possible forced deportation.
6) The Lord is opening doors for us/me to minister to Japanese people in Europe. After our visit to the Japanese church in Switzerland in March, I have just visited Graz, the second biggest city in Austria and helped with a Japanese Bible Study group. In June is another visit to Czech Republic. Sachi is also meeting with a Japanese woman for prayer and the Bible study. Although people are hungry for the Word of God, there is a serious lack of pastors in Europe who can speak Japanese, and we pray that God of harvest would meet their needs.
Another highlight is having bumped into Mr. N. at our Sunday church service. When we first moved into our current town three years ago, we got to know him in our neighborhood. Coming to a conversation with Austrians about faith or religion is generally not easy, and we hardly have anything more than a small talk.
One Sunday, as we entered the church auditorium, I totally unexpectedly saw Mr. N. sitting on a chair. I approached and greeted him. As soon as he saw me, his eyes were literally wide opened in astonishment and I gave him a welcome hug. Sachi also greeted him and he seemed totally stunned.
How did he end up there after all? His story is as follows. He used to hold tightly to his atheistic belief and deny the existence of God. However, having been diagnosed with severe disease and gone through treatments last year, his perception has begun to change. In his hospital room, he got to know a person from our church who invited him to Rhema church. At his first visit to Rhema, his Japanese neighbors suddenly showed up before his eyes. Mr. N. talked to our pastor after the service and got the Bible. “I can’t believe all of this. I must calm down and marshal what I have been experiencing. I’ll read this book”, said Mr. N, showing us the Bible in his hand. I gave my number and told him that we are there for him, whenever and whatever he needed.
Yesterday Sachi came across him on the street. He shared that the day before was his medical check-up and everything was good, he felt God was protecting him. He is reading the Bible every day, and even senses that he is coming closer to the Lord.
On the day Mr. N. visited the church, the title of the sermon was “the longing for acceptance”, and the love and the Gospel of Christ was preached.
“Why did Jesus have to die?” Not only our 5-year-old daughter, but also people of all nations and generations need to hear the answer to the important question. We feel thoroughly privileged to be able to serve for this very thing.
「いつになく静か、また何かしてるな・・。」理歩名は、自分の部屋にこもって、悪いとわかっていることをするときは、とても静かになります。例えば、幼稚園に行く直前の慌ただしい朝、ピンクとブルーで顔全体をしっかりお化粧したりと、仕事を増やしてくれます。しかし今回は、ちょっと状況が違いました。突然号泣し、リビングルームのママのところに駆け寄ってくるのです。サチがなぜ泣いているのか尋ねると、「イエスさま死んじゃった…」 と声を震わせて、涙ながらに答えました。子ども聖書を読んでいて、十字架のストーリーを見ていたみたいです。ちょうどイースターの数日前で、「イエスさまはなぜ死なれなければならなかったのか」というこの重要な問いについて娘と話しました。
ここ数週間は、いろんな励まされることがありました。
1) オーストリアで初めて（ルーマニア人の）結婚式に出席しました。
2) 夫婦で、6家族からなるセルグループのために巻き寿司を作りました。あんなにたくさんのお寿司を作ったのは初めてです！
3) サチがビザ延長に必須のドイツ語試験に合格しました! 主をほめたたえます！合格しなければならないドイツ語試験はもうありません。
4) リーダーの役割を担っている、InterK（現地教会の異文化ミニストリー）で、「女性カフェ」が始まりました。イスラム文化では、男性は女性と気軽に話したり、交流することが禁じられています。主の導きにより、サチを含むInterKの4人の女性スタッフが女性のための伝道を始め、インターナショナルな背景を持つ5人の女性が最初の集いに来ました。非常に好評な反響で、サチが招待した中東の女性2人はすでに次回のカフェ（週一回）を楽しみにしています。
5) 僕ら夫婦がケアをしている若いイラン人夫婦は、最近第一子を授かっただけでなく、亡命申請も受理されました。（初回の申請で受理されるのはイラン人にはかなり稀なケースです。）彼らは現在正式な難民となり、強制送還の恐れなく暮らすことができます。
6) 主はヨーロッパ在住の日本人の方々に奉仕する扉を開いてくださっています。 3月にスイスの日本語教会を訪問した後、今回はオーストリア第二の都市グラーツで日本語バイブルスタディをお手伝いしました。6月にはチェコを訪問します。サチもリンツで祈りやバイブルスタディのために定期的に日本人女性と会っています。多くの同胞が御言葉に飢えていますが、ヨーロッパでは日本語を話せる牧師不足が深刻で、収穫の主が人々のニーズを満たしてくださるよう祈っているところです。ぜひ共にお祈りください。
もう一つのハイライトは、日曜礼拝でNさんに“偶然”会ったことです。3年前に私たちが現在の町に引っ越してきたとき、近所で彼と知り合いました。 オーストリア人と信仰や宗教について話しをするのは通常容易ではなく、雑談以上のことはほとんどしません。
ある日曜日、教会の会堂に入ったとき、椅子に座っているNさんが目に入りました。まったく予期してなかったので嬉しくて、彼にかけ寄り、挨拶をしました。 彼は僕を見るやいなや、驚きで文字通り目を丸く大きく開き、僕は歓迎のハグで挨拶を交わしました。サチも彼のもとに行き挨拶をしましたが、彼はすっかり唖然とした様子でした。
Nさんは結局どうやってそこに行き着いたのでしょう？彼のストーリーは次のとおりです。彼は長年無神論的な信念を堅持し、神の存在を否定していました。しかし、昨年大病を患い、治療を受けたことで、彼の見解は変わり始めたそうです。 病室で私たちの教会の人と知り合い、その人が彼をレマ教会に誘ってくれたのだそうです。そして初めて礼拝に来た時に、近所の日本人が突然目の前に現れたのです。Nさんは礼拝後私たちの牧師と話し、聖書を手に入れました。「今私に起こっていることのすべてが信じられません。一回落ち着いて、整理しなければなりません。この本を読んでみます」と手にした聖書を私たちの方に見せながら嬉しそうに言いました。そして、私たちはいつでもどんなことでも何かあったら連絡くださいと、紙に書いた電話番号を彼に渡しました。
昨日サチが道で彼に会った時、前日に受けた経過観察検査ですべてが良好で、神さまが守ってくださっている気がすると分かち合ってくれたそうです。毎日聖書を読んでおり、神さまに近づいていると感じているそうです。
Ｎさんが教会を訪れた日のメッセージは「受け入れられることへの切望（承認欲求）」というタイトルで語られ、キリストの愛と福音が宣べ伝えられました。
「なぜイエスは死なれなければならなかったのか？」 私たちの5歳の娘だけでなく、あらゆる国や世代の人々が、この重要な問いに対する答えを聞く必要があります。そのために活動できることに心からの幸いを感じます。
